Case Study: Monkey Wrench Brewing

Brand Strategy Community Building Crowdfunding PR and Media Zero-to-Launch

Category: Consumer Brand / Startup

Role: Co-Founder / Brand & Marketing Lead

1) Context

Monkey Wrench Brewing is a 16,000 sq ft craft brewery in Suwanee, Georgia. Co-founded the operation with no agency support and no investor budget, building over eight years of nights and weekends alongside three full-time professional roles.

2) Problem

Build a credible craft brewery brand and community presence years before there was a physical location, a product to sell, or a launch date. Cross the funding gap to take the project from concept to facility. Survive an opening month that turned out to coincide with the start of a global pandemic.

3) Approach

Built the brand identity, audience, and content cadence before the brewery had an address. Ran home-brew batches, festival appearances, competitions, and tastings to establish credibility in the Atlanta craft beer scene. Cultivated press relationships and a growing email list over eight years. Closed the funding gap through a revenue-sharing crowdfund, the first of its kind for a Georgia business. Opened January 2020 into pandemic closures, with the audience built over the prior eight years carrying the launch through.
