How Do You Get Leads From SEO Instead of Just Traffic?
To get leads from search, start with the number of qualified conversations you need and work backward. Build pages for the people already comparing options: alternatives, comparisons, pricing questions and specific problems you solve. Then give every page one commercial job and measure it by the conversations it starts, with traffic as a supporting number.
Why does traffic feel like progress when it isn't paying off?
Because it goes up and to the right, and it's easy to screenshot. I've chased it too. For years the scoreboard in most marketing meetings was sessions, rankings and impressions, and I reported plenty of them.
The owner or CEO across the table wants something simpler. One SEO agency founder who works with more than 50 B2B clients put a sales prospect's words at the top of a post I saved: they don't care about ranking on Google, they just want leads. That's a fair ask. It's your job and mine to build toward it.
Which searches are closest to a buying decision?
The searches worth your early effort come from people who are already shopping. The same founder's list is a good starting map:
"[Competitor] alternatives"
"[Your product] vs [competitor]"
"Best [category] for [use case]"
The specific problems you solve, in the buyer's words
Product and integration questions
For a local business the shape is identical with different nouns. Think "[service] cost in Alpharetta," "[option A] vs [option B]," or "best [service] for [specific situation]."
His examples are worth knowing. A client called VerifyTreatment focused on solution, product and comparison pages and went from 5 to 32 monthly demos in under 90 days. Another, Kubaru, doubled qualified demo requests in one quarter and moved to a 60/40 lead mix with organic in the lead. Those are vendor-reported results, so treat them as direction, but the direction matches what I've seen.
What job should each page do?
One commercial job per page. A comparison page helps someone choose. A solution page proves you understand their exact problem. A product or service page makes the next step obvious.
If a page gets traffic and nobody reaches out, check whether it actually matches the search that brought people there. Look for proof, real use cases and a clear next step near the top. Breaking B2B's playbook adds a useful habit: put a short summary up top, because AI search tools pull chunks of a page instead of reading the whole thing.
How does this work alongside AI search?
Buyers now research inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews before they ever visit your site. Breaking B2B cites research that about two thirds of B2B buyers use AI chatbots as much as or more than traditional search when evaluating software, and an Ahrefs study where 0.5 percent of AI-referred traffic drove 12.1 percent of signups. Low volume, high intent.
The good news for you: the same bottom-of-funnel pages that win on Google tend to be the ones AI tools cite. Strong SEO is still the foundation the AI layer sits on.
At Johnson Matthey I owned the 60 to 70 web pages tied to our sector, which saw roughly a million visits a year. We took terms like "low carbon hydrogen" and "SAF technology" to page one by structuring content the way answer engines read it and pairing pages with YouTube video. Our low carbon hydrogen page grew 337 percent year over year. Honest footnote: those were conventional organic results earned alongside the AI-era work, and I learned a lot by watching which pages moved first.
How should you measure SEO if rankings aren't the goal?
Put these on the dashboard your leadership actually reads:
Qualified leads or demos by landing page
Lead-to-opportunity conversion
Pipeline or revenue influenced by organic
Free-text answers to "How did you hear about us?"
Keep rankings and traffic as diagnostics underneath. They tell you what to fix. The conversations tell you whether it's working.
FAQ
How long does bottom-of-funnel SEO take to produce leads?
The examples above report movement inside 90 days, though results vary with competition and how much content you already have. Refreshing pages that already rank on page two is usually the fastest win.
Should I stop writing top-of-funnel content?
Keep some, especially if it answers questions your sales team hears every week. Just put most of your early effort into pages for people who are already comparing options.
Is it risky to name competitors on my site?
Fair comparisons build trust. Be accurate, cover each option honestly, and let your strengths speak for themselves.
